Furniture Joints

There are many factors to consider when designing and making furniture from design stages through to furniture standard sizes and joints used. You will need to revisit this page when designing your project for semester two and again in third year for your Capstone Project.

Opposite is the version that I showed you in class. See if you know the names of the joints

Take another look at the PP's on drawer construction to see if you would like to use hand cut or machine made drawers. Revisite the videos on using the Dovetailing machine and remember to always machine out some spare sections of wood to test joint before placing your actual pieces into the machine.

Familiarise yourself with the various different table top and cabinet shapes set out in no. 4 below. What shape top will your Half sheet table have? How are you planning on machining it out? Important Always allow for solid timber top movement. The top should be held down but not fixed in place. Why??????

There are numerous door styles. Look at the traditional and modern methods of making doors. Remember the same style doors are called many names on various websites selling Kitchens, wardrobes etc. but you need to decide what joint you plan on using to make your door. This will depend on whether you have a rebate or groove and plan on using M&T's, dowells, biscuits or dominos.
