Furniture Joints:
It is very important to know which joint to use where. Remember the more gluing
area the stronger the joint will be. Having watched the slide show see if you can think of what joints to use in making the furniture items above. Revisit the furniture that you measured up today can you guess what joints have been used or is the furniture constructed using mainly Knock Down fittings? We will be discussing Knock Down (KD) fittings later in the module.

The Golden Ratio explained in simple language with great demonstrations, after watching this video I want you to take a measuring tape and measure some furniture around your house. Look at the top surface, see if there is a ratio of 1:1.618 between the long and short side. Repeat for the front and sides.
The Golden Ratio, Golden Mean, Golden Section, Golden Rectangle many names but same thing! The second Video demonstrates using the Fibonacci Gauge to design the proportions of a piece of furniture. This will be useful to remember when designing your half sheet table.

Safety National Standards
Irish safety standards can be
found in the Irish Statute Book
Section 28 of the National Standards
Authority of Ireland Act, 1996, sets out regulations governing “the safe use of
commodities and safe practices”.
The Act empowers the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to prohibit
the manufacture, storage, supply, sale or exhibition of goods which fail to
comply with the requirements of the relevant Irish Standards or their
equivalent.
